Every city has more than one story to tell and one face to show. Regardless of the artistic background, each place is full of inspiring individuals making its own culture and story. In Plus’s online initiative, ‘City Talks,’ we feature 10 creatives representing the designated city per season, asking contributors to share personal relatedness and building an engaging community that gives a sense of belonging.
The second season takes place in Los Angeles, and this week, we discuss with Grant-Levy Lucero. Drawing on Greco-Roman forms, Levy-Lucero is known for decorating his handbuilt glazed stoneware with the iconography of recognizable brand logos, including for snacks, dog food, and beer.
What is the first thing you do when you wake up?
The first thing I do when I wake up is kissing my wife and my dog.
Where is your favorite (go-to) restaurant in LA? Why?
My favorite go-to restaurant in LA is either Houston’s or Bar Restaurant. Good service and great food, every time.
What are your ways of recharging/ taking breaks?
If I need a little mental break, I walk my dog around the block. If I need a physical one, I take a nap.
What song are you into these days (and why)?
“Carry the Zero” by Built to Spill. I don’t know why, but lately, I’ve been listening to my old high school favorites again.
How do you choose the form/imagery for your work?
I normally work on groups of pieces at a time, so I will gather a large pool of imagery found on the pedestrian level of LA—things I see walking and biking around. Then I decide which image seems to match with which blank sculpture. It’s a pretty intuitive process.
What role does dimensionality/ size/color play in your practice?
I love color and I’m always trying to use as much of it as possible. Again, as I’m working on a group of pieces, I start seeing which colors work well together amongst the others.
If you could have any artwork in your house, what would it be?
Richard Serra, Tilted Arc.
How would you describe the art scene in Los Angeles?
The art scene in LA is super supportive. We have a really strong community of artists sharing ideas and resources with each other.
What changes would you like to see in the art industry at large?
Larger public art funds and a larger public collection.
Which three qualities in yourself are you most thankful for?
I’m healthy, happy, and hungry.
